Buying a Generator

I have to tell you, I was walking in blind. I was not sure what to look for exactly, but I knew I needed a generator. I had a problem the last time we lost power, a big one. I lost a ton of data that I needed, a lot of food went bad, everything was a mess.

So I walked into check out what I could find at a local place, generac generator service Spring TX, and they helped me out immensely. The first thing I did was tell them what I wanted and asked them a question “What do I need to know about using a generator?”

The first thing the man I spoke to said was fuel type is important. Gas is what most smaller ones run on, but there are some that run on propane and some that use natural gas. Since I’ve never used propane before and don’t want to have to run around and make sure I have enough gasoline on hand, I decided on natural gas.

There is a lot of stuff that needs to be kept running in emergencies, so the next question he asked was about power output. When I gave him the rundown of all the equipment I need to keep running he told me that a 10,000 – 15,000-watt generator would be more than adequate for my needs. That sounds like a lot but he made the point, after asking about what kind of heat I have, that since I have an electric heater that can eat as much as 4,500 watts of power, and that most smaller homes like mine can power the bulk of their appliances in the 3,000 to 4,000-watt range, and you do want a little bit of play, as you don’t know how things will change as far as power consumption in the future.

The next question was about portability. The moment he said that was the first time I’d thought about that, and to be honest I don’t really need it to be all that portable. I’m not throwing it in the back of my Mazda CX-5 to use anywhere, it’s for my home business and for me and the kids. I told him as much.

I ended up getting the Guardian model 11kw generator, and I got a pretty good deal on it, and it comes with a five year limited warranty. I got what I needed to keep everything running at a reasonable price, and the people were friendly and reliable. It’s all as you can ask for.
